Section Editor for Social Media and Assistant Editor at EJVES

Section Editor for Social Media Vacancy (scroll down for Assistant Editor vacancy)

The EJVES works with a professional career path in scientific publishing within the field vascular surgery: i.e. Reviewers, Editorial Board (EB) members, and finally Editors. We do invite scholars to review papers, and this peer review system is the key to success for any scientific journal. In November each year the Editorial Board (EB) is renewed, based on the performance of the reviewers the last 12 and 24 months. Every single review is scored between 1-100, depending on its quality. To qualify to be invited to become a member of the EB, she/he must have performed at least 10 reviews the last year, with a mean score >70. Furthermore, 2/3 of the invitations must have been accepted, and 80% the reports must have been submitted within the time limit (normally 3 weeks).

Thus, when selecting new editors the members of the EB are those we normally consider, and we send a special invitation to all EB members of the EJVES. It is possible, however, that persons may have worked with other journals, or have other academic experiences, that make them suitable to become an editor of this journal, and we will consider all applications.

For this particular post, experience in Social Media, as well as of having served previously as assistant editor, are important qualifications that we pay special attention to. This editor will also manage other research papers within her or his expertise area, in collaboration with that section editor.

The application should be submitted by email to the ESVS office (info@esvs.org) by March 15, 2023, the latest, and should include the following:

1) A letter of intention. Why are you applying for this post, and do you have thoughts about how to develop the EJVES? (maximum 2 pages)

2) A short CV with your most important academic achievements. (maximum 2 pages)

3) A list of peer reviewed articles published in scientific journals with a journal impact factor. Please highlight the 10 most important publications.

The top candidates will then be invited to an interview led by the Editor-in-Chief (Martin Björck) and the Senior Editor (Jonathan Boyle) .

Assistant Editors Vacancy

The EJVES is a leading surgical journal with a current impact factor of 6.43. It is looking for two motivated and ambitious young members of the European Society for Vascular Surgery (ESVS) to reinforce the Editorial Staff as Assistant Editors from May 2023 for a 1 year term with potential renewal for another year.

Who can apply?

Young and ambitious academic vascular surgeons with interest in scientific reporting and the publication process. Although this is a junior position, you should have a good general knowledge of vascular surgery (e.g. last year resident or young specialist) and experience in scientific writing including understanding of research methodology and reporting standards (e.g. PhD). In addition you should be an experienced reviewer for scientific journals, preferably for the EJVES.

What is expected from you?

You will have a unique opportunity for intimate insight into the processes of a premium scientific journal from submission through selection, scientific and formal editing up to eventual publication. Therefore, good communication skills with both the authors and the editorial team are needed. You will circulate and shadow different section editors for 6 month periods, in order to get acquainted with different fields of vascular surgical research.

You will also work closely with the Social Media editor, who will also serve as your supervisor during the two year period. Together with him or her you will participate in the development of visual abstracts, and in promoting papers published in the journal. Therefore, a dedicated attitude with diligent attention to detail is expected. In addition, your working situation should allow for this exciting but also somewhat time consuming additional workload.

What can you expect?

You will work as important member of the editorial team of a leading scientific journal and participate in monthly telephone calls and two physical meetings per year. Travel and accommodation cost will be covered to the strategic meeting in January by the journal. You will be welcome to attend the Journal Editorial Board meeting during the ESVS scientific annual meeting.

How to apply?

Please send your application and your motivation letter by email to the ESVS office (info@esvs.org) by March 20. Your application should be accompanied by your CV, the list of publications and a letter of support from your head of department.

Shortlisted applicants will be invited to an online interview with the Senior Editors and the Social Media editor. Candidates will be informed of the election result before the end of the year. The actual work as Assistant Editor is planned to start in May 2023.
